BDSA Be Kind: Why Every Move Matters in Dance

Dance is often seen as an art form built on discipline, performance and precision. But behind that, it is also a community, one where young people spend hours training, competing and developing not just as dancers, but as individuals. It is also, by its nature, a judging-intensive environment. Competition, comparison and external evaluation are part of the sport, and for many young dancers that can create pressure which affects confidence, enjoyment and overall experience. That is where culture matters.

Research in recent years has made one thing very clear: kindness is not just a nice idea, it has a measurable impact on how young people feel and interact with others. Studies involving children have shown that those who regularly perform acts of kindness experience higher levels of wellbeing and stronger peer relationships. In one well-known classroom experiment, students who carried out small acts of kindness over a number of weeks became more accepted by their peers and reported greater overall happiness. What is particularly interesting is that people often underestimate how much their actions matter. Research into prosocial behaviour has found that individuals tend to believe their acts of kindness will have only a small impact, while those on the receiving end report that those same actions mean significantly more to them than expected. In other words, small moments matter more than we think.

This is especially relevant in environments like dance. A word of encouragement before a performance, a congratulation after a round, or support for someone who is struggling can shape how a young dancer experiences the sport. These are not big gestures, but they can have a lasting impact. Alongside this, broader research into young people’s mental health continues to highlight the importance of positive environments. In England, around one in five children are estimated to have a probable mental health disorder, and at the same time, evidence shows that positive experiences in sport and physical activity can improve wellbeing, build resilience and increase confidence. The key point is that participation alone is not enough. The environment in which young people participate matters just as much.

This is why the British Dance Sport Association is launching the Be Kind campaign. The aim is simple: to promote a culture where respect, encouragement and positive behaviour are part of everyday practice in dance, not as an afterthought but as something that sits alongside performance and competition. Dance is not just about how well someone performs, it is about how people feel while they are part of it. The message behind the campaign is straightforward: Every Move Matters. Not just the steps on the floor, but the way dancers, instructors, judges and parents interact with one another. If small acts of kindness can improve confidence, strengthen relationships and shape positive experiences, then they are worth paying attention to. And in a sport where so much focus is placed on performance, they may be one of the most important things we can get right.
