Introduction

The BDSA Sovereign League is a national points league organised by the British DanceSport Association (BDSA). It brings together a series of approved competitions held throughout the year, allowing dancers to earn points based on their results at each event.

As competitors take part in these competitions, their points are added together to create a league table within each category. At the end of the League season, the highest-ranked competitors will be recognised for their achievements.

The League also provides an opportunity for the top competitors to represent Great Britain at the European Confederation of Dance Sports Championships, giving dancers an opportunity for international representation.

This document explains how the League works, including how points are awarded, the competition classifications, and the requirements for organisers and promoters hosting League events.

These rules should be read in conjunction with the BDSA Competition Rules and all other BDSA Policies.

BDSA Sovereign League Regulations

1. Age Categories for Couples and Solos

A competitor's age is determined by the competitor's age on the 31st of December 2026 at 23:59:59 GMT and remains fixed for the full 2026 BDSA Sovereign League calendar.

Where a couple is made up of partners who are in different age categories, the couple must compete in the appropriate age category of the oldest partner, unless the couple have been given a special dispensation by the BDSA.

(As per BDSA Competition Rules)

  • Juvenile III: Under 12 years

  • Junior II: 12–15 years

  • Youth II: 16–21 years

  • Amateur: 16 years and over

  • Senior 1: Over 35 years

2. League Scoring System

Points are awarded based on final placements at each qualifying competition:

  • A couple's point will be awarded to the couple as a pair.

  • BDSA Sovereign League ranking points will only be awarded to dancer or dancers who hold an individual BDSA membership and meet the nationality eligibility criteria set out in section 3. This does not prevent international dancers who hold an individual BDSA membership from competing in a competition.

  • If, during any competition, a non‑BDSA member or any couple or solo competitor who does not meet the nationality eligibility criteria achieves a higher placing than a competitor who is a current BDSA member and who does meet all nationality eligibility criteria, the finishing order will not disadvantage the eligible BDSA competitor. In such cases, the eligible BDSA competitor will be treated as the highest‑placed eligible competitor for the purpose of league scoring. Meaning that the eligible BDSA competitor will receive the top-ranking points available to eligible competitors, as if they had placed highest among all eligible competitors, regardless of their actual finishing position relative to non‑eligible participants.

3. General League Conditions

  • All competitors must compete in the correct age category.

  • Verification of age may be requested by event officials on the day of the event.

  • Points will not be carried over if a dancer swaps dance partners throughout the League. If a dancer swaps partners during the League, they are required to inform the BDSA so the original partnership can be removed from the League table. A dancer may not compete in any further competition until they have notified the BDSA Office.

  • Only dancers who hold an up-to-date individual BDSA membership can be awarded ranking points in the BDSA Sovereign League. In a couple, both dancers must hold an up-to-date individual BDSA membership. Competitors may register online for BDSA Membership up to and including the day of the competition. If membership is completed on that day, League points from the event will still be allocated. (If you have any queries, please contact the BDSA Office Monday to Friday between 9am and 5pm.)

  • All BDSA Rules and Policies must be followed.

  • The BDSA’s decision regarding points, calculations and League standings may be appealed to the BDSA Selection Committee. All appeals must be submitted to the BDSA Selection Committee within 14 days of the competition. Competitors may only appeal their own competition results.

  • Competitors do not need to enter every competition. League calculations will be based on the sum total of the best 75% of a competitor's results from across the League.

  • The highest-ranked couple and the highest-ranked solo competitor from each category at the end of the League, who are also eligible to compete for Great Britain, will be offered the opportunity to represent Great Britain at the European Confederation of Dance Sports Championships on the 5th - 6th December 2026 in Tallin Estonia.

  • If the top-ranked couple or solo competitor is not able to compete in the European Confederation of Dance Sports Championships, the opportunity will be offered to the next highest-ranked competitors.

  • The BDSA will provide a small bursary towards basic travel and accommodation. Full details will be included in the invitation.

  • To be eligible to represent Great Britian a solo competitor must hold a valid British Passport, British Citizenship or have Indefinite Leave to Remain.

  • To be eligible to represent Great Britain as a couple, one of the dancers in the couple must hold a valid British Passport, British Citizenship or have Indefinite Leave to Remain.

4. League Dates

  • The BDSA Sovereign League will run from 29 March 2026 to 5 November 2026.
