Modern
Modern dance is an expressive and creative style that focuses on freedom of movement, individuality, emotion, and physical storytelling. It developed as a contrast to the strict structure of classical ballet, allowing dancers to explore more natural, grounded, and personal ways of moving.
This style often includes contractions, releases, swings, falls, floorwork, turns, jumps, travelling sequences, and changes in weight, rhythm, and direction. Dancers may move with fluidity, sharpness, strength, or stillness, depending on the choreography and theme.
Modern dance places strong emphasis on body awareness, breath, control, coordination, musicality, and expression. It encourages dancers to use the whole body to communicate ideas, feelings, or stories, often exploring movement in a more abstract or experimental way.
It is commonly performed in classes, showcases, competitions, theatre productions, and contemporary stage work. Modern dance is a versatile and thoughtful style that combines technical skill with creativity, helping dancers develop confidence, artistry, and a deeper connection to movement.
