Dance Styles

At Salsatropical® Dance Academy, we specialise in the vibrant and infectious styles of Latin dance, with a primary focus on Salsa, Bachata, Cha-Cha, Salsa on2, and Dominican Bachata.

Style History

The dance styles taught at Salsatropical® have rich and distinct histories rooted in the vibrant cultures of Latin America. Salsa, with its fiery energy and intricate partner work, emerged in Cuba in the mid-20th century, born from the fusion of Son, Mambo, and other Afro-Cuban rhythms, and was later popularised and named in New York City. Bachata, originating from the Dominican Republic, tells a story of social change; once considered the music of the rural poor and marginalised, its soulful melodies and sensual movements have captivated the world. The Cha-Cha, also a Cuban creation, was developed in the 1950s by composer Enrique Jorrín, who simplified the Mambo rhythm to create a fun, infectious, and easy-to-follow dance with its characteristic "one-two-cha-cha-cha" shuffle.
